Where did my Sex Drive go?!

Sexual dysfunction is far more common than you probably think.  Just under half of women report some sexual concern and nearly 1 out of every 8 report distressing problems.   Problems can range from lack of desire, impaired arousal, inability to orgasm, pain with sex, or some combination of these.

Some of these issues are limited to a specific social situation, a specific partner, after childbirth or after a traumatic event.  Some of these are issues women have been struggling with for years.

Probably the most common issue women complain of is lack of desire.  For some women they feel it’s always been that way.   For others, it’s new.

Common causes of decreased libido (sex drive):

  • Fatigue
  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Substance use disorders
  • Abuse (mental or physical, past or present)
  • Certain medications (ie. Prozac)
  • Relationship issues
  • Partner’s sexual dysfunction
  • Painful sex
  • Pelvic pain
  • Major medical issues
  • Weight gain resulting in poor body image
  • Incontinence
  • Genitourinary syndrome of menopause
  • Hot flashes (vasomotor symptoms) related to menopause

Regardless of the context, if you’re experiencing distress related to sexual function, you should be seen.   After assessing your goals, creating a treatment plan is important to help you move forward.   These plans are often multi-modal: lifestyle changes, over the counter creams and gels, prescription creams and gels, prescription medications, therapy, couples’ therapy, sex therapy, experimentation, pelvic physical therapy to name a few.

What’s important is sitting down with your personal OBGYN, whom you trust, and stating your concern.  After an exam to evaluate possible anatomic/infections problems, a treatment plan that best fits your issue can be developed.
