You Should Get the Flu Shot

In spite of its enormous value to individuals, businesses and society as a whole, nearly half of Americans avoid the flu shot every year.

Most people don’t get the shot for some common reasons:

  • Avoiding needles
  • Muscle soreness after the vaccine
  • Some people get the flu anyways after having the vaccine
  • The flu isn’t “that bad”

In fact, most people fall into that last category.  When asked why a person won’t get the flu shot, nearly half of people say because it’s just not that bad of an illness.

Why you should get the vaccine:

  • You can’t get the flu from the flu shot.
  • The flu can kill people, even healthy adults.
  • It takes a few weeks for the vaccine to kick in, so if you get sick right after the shot it was just a coincidence.
  • If you still get the flu, the vaccine helps you fend off life-threatening complications.

Most importantly, it’s not about you.  It’s about those most vulnerable.  You should get vaccinated so that others, who are much more vulnerable than you, don’t get the flu.   The elderly, the babies, the pregnant women and the immunocompromised.   When these people get the flu, they get really sick and are at a much higher risk of hospitalization, serious complications and death than anyone in the general population.  Most of us come into contact with at least some are elderly, very young, pregnant or immunocompromised on a daily or at least weekly basis: at the grocery store, the mall, work, parks, etc.

If your own health isn’t reason enough for you to get the flu shot, then consider it a humanitarian contribution to the vulnerable in society and go visit your primary care physician and get yours ASAP!
