COVID19 Vaccine in Pregnancy: CDC Update

Though the COVID19 Vaccine has been recommended for all pregnant women since January by the American Society of Reproductive Medicine and since July by the American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology and the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the CDC put out an urgent recommendation this week for the vaccination of all pregnant women due to rising, record-breaking hospitalization and mortality of pregnant women in August.

As of Sept of this year, only 31% of pregnant women have been vaccinated.   Hesitancy to get vaccinated in pregnancy with a new vaccine is completely understandable.  We support every woman’s right to make that decision for herself.  However, we are also alarmed by the rising hospitalization of mortality of pregnant women and harm to the fetuses they carry.   97% of severe cases of COVID19 in pregnant are occurring in women who have not yet been vaccinated.

If you have concerns about the safety of the COVID19 vaccine in pregnancy, please bring it up with us at your next appointment.
