Discussion around booster shots for the COVID19 vaccine has been going on for a few months now.  At the end of September, Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) put out their recommendations on the booster shot.

The recommendation is for people who received their last shot of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine at least 6 months ago who are also:

Following this announcement, the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) and the American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology put out a joint statement that pregnancy qualifies as an “underlying medical condition”.

Your physicians at El Camino Women’s Medical Group have gotten or are arranging to receive our booster vaccines, as we are all healthcare workers and fall under the CDC recommendation of people working in high-risk settings.   We are also highly recommending the booster vaccine for our pregnant patients who are more than 6 months from their second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID19 vaccine.

For those women who received the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccines, we are anticipating guidance on booster shots in the near future.

If you are pregnant and have not yet been vaccinated against COVID19, we strongly encourage you to bring up your concerns at your next appointment.   We support every woman’s right to decide what’s best for her and her fetus but encourage you to bring up your concerns with us so we can address them.   If you were previously vaccinated with the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID19 vaccine in April or earlier, we are recommending you get the booster shot.
